Mikhael Subotzky, 2008 W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant Recipient

Mikhael Subotzky was born in 1981 in Cape Town, South Africa. He received the 2007 Young Photographer Award at Perpignan, The 2007 KLM Paul Huf Award, The Special Jurors Award at the 2005 Seventh Recontres Africaines de la Photographie in Bamako and the 2006 F25 Award for Concerned Photography. His prints are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the South African National Gallery (Cape Town), and The Johannesburg Art Gallery.

He is working on an in-depth project about crime, punishment and security in post-apartheid South Africa. Along with poverty and AIDS, crime has become the single most divisive issue facing South Africa today.
